jim sain — bass

Jim Sain brings an eclectic music style to Obrigado. Jim started his musical career at age 9 studying classical flute for nearly a decade with Fredrick Baker, first flautist with the San Diego Symphony. Sain began his forays into jazz while in high school as the pianist and organist with his school's big band.

Sain's interest in jazz continued through college. He formed and led a jazz fusion combo that played before 80,000 people at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium for the Mitsubishi sponsored Mirage Bowl. He also played tenor saxophone in the college big band and studied jazz arranging with Ken Hanna of Stan Kenton fame.

As a bassist Sain plays fretted and fretless 4 to 6 string electric basses as well as acoustic upright bass in a multitude of popular and jazz styles. As a multi-instrumentalist, he has played in studio sessions in San Diego and Hollywood, California as well as Gainesville, Florida. Sain holds a doctorate in music composition and was a lead architect in building the world renowned composition program at the University of Florida.
