guitars :: charlie scheer
Charlie Scheer started playing the ukulele at age nine. His older sister received one as a gift and his quick proficiency led to unscripted appearances which surprised the audience as well as the budding musician. When he was 12, he traded his uke for a guitar and started his guitar career without first knowing even how to tune the instrument. At 15, Charlie's formal career was launched when he worked three shows in an old fashioned minstrel fundraiser for his church in suburban Philadelphia. After joining the U.S. Navy, and gaining the money for a better instrument, at 19 Charlie played a 1961 Gretsch Chet Atkins guitar throughout his Navy tour in cities wherever he was stationed, including entertaining shipmates on submarines. These gigs introduced him to and made him a fan of jazz and swing music while still in his 20's. During the 1970's, 80's and 90's, Charlie played in numerous bands which each followed a number of styles, but his heart remained with jazz and swing music. In North Florida, Charlie played the bass for years with the popular group "Gumbo Limbo," the Gainesville-based Cajun and Zydeco band. Charlie now regularly plays guitar in church and in Florida correctional institutions for a prison ministry. He delights in being the guitarist for the Legacy Jazz Trio, to which he adds his personal blend of jazz, blues and swing to the band's repertoire. |
